Zoo Boise African Village Adventure

Project Description:  The African Plains project created an exotic home for giraffes, lions, zebras, and lemurs at Zoo Boise.   The Project included five new buildings, viewing structures, a bridge, boat docks, boardwalks, walking paths and gathering areas to replicate an African Village.  The challenging site covered 3.5 acres and is adjacent to the Boise River on top of an old dump site.  Work included excavation and strategic placement of animal barriers and landscaping using salvaged natural resources.

Scope: Construction Management

Structures:  Structures varied from Metal Building, Structural Masonry, Steel Studs, and Log construction.

Challenges:  Precise construction scheduling and management was necessary to protect the health and well being of the animals.  Strict compliance with feeding, care and transport requirements for giraffes and lions meant the difference in life and death for the new arrivals.  All facilities for feeding, veterinary care and roaming had to be completed and safe for animals, zoo caretakers, and construction personnel as soon as the animals completed their journey across the country.
